How receipt scanning works

  1. Capture the receiptTake a photo with the camera or pick an existing PDF, JPEG or PNG via the Android file picker.
  2. Recognise locallyText recognition runs on the device and suggests merchant, total, date and line items.
  3. Review and bookCheck the values, correct them if needed and save a new transaction or link an existing one.

What is recognised

FinanceCounter reads merchant, total and date from the receipt, plus individual line items – including discounts, deposits and tax rates per line where they are printed. Refunds are recognised as such.

Recognition gives you suggestions, not guarantees: faded thermal print, crumpled receipts or unusual layouts can cause errors. That is why the app always shows a review screen before anything is saved.

Privacy when scanning

For text recognition FinanceCounter uses Google ML Kit’s on-device model built into the app. Receipt images, PDFs and recognised text are not sent to a FinanceCounter server or a cloud OCR service. Saved receipt originals stay in the app’s private storage and are part of your encrypted backups. The camera photo itself is deleted after processing.

Linking to transactions

A scanned receipt can create a new transaction or be matched to an existing one. FinanceCounter checks for possible duplicates along the way. Receipts you want to assign later are collected in a review list.

Screenshots and invoices

With Premium you can also turn screenshots – such as a payment confirmation – into transaction suggestions. Invoices you want to keep as a document rather than a till receipt go into the documents area.

FAQ

Common questions

How does receipt scanning work?

You photograph the receipt with the camera or pick a PDF, JPEG or PNG file (PDFs up to ten pages). Text recognition with Google ML Kit runs on the device and suggests merchant, total, date and line items. You review and correct the values before anything is saved. Free: 5 scans per month, Premium: unlimited.

Are there backups?

Yes. Backups are encrypted with your password (at least 12 characters) using AES-256-GCM and include transactions, receipts, attachments and documents. Manual backups are included in the Free version; automatic daily or weekly backups to a folder you choose come with Premium. A backup cannot be restored without its password. Restoring requires an active Premium subscription or trial.

Are receipts uploaded to a cloud?

No. Receipt photos, PDFs and recognised text are not sent to a FinanceCounter server or a cloud OCR service. Saved receipt originals stay in private app storage and are part of your encrypted backups.
